Question about Social Security Number Field

Does anyone know if social security number is a string field or numbers only?

It's a string, at least in my database (although here in the UK our equivalent to SSNs are alpha-numeric, so it's possible that could be different between the UK and US versions?)


One way to find out would be to try adding one with letters and see if it'll let you save the record.

Australian version here - we use this field for our Uni's identity management ID, which is alpha-numeric, so string field.
