Splitting Shared Addresses - Blackbaud needs your feedback

Hi Folks,

We are looking to better understand how you currently split share addresses. We want to better understand your workflow and the reasons why you might want to split a shared address or household in order to determine what if anything about that process needs to be fixed or updated. If splitting up shared addresses is cumbersome, we will do our level best to provide you with an Easy Button for it. Please share with us the process you go through at your schools to split shared addresses and the reasons you would want to split one.

As always, we appreciate any insight you can give us into how to improve your experience with K12.

Best regards,

Alex Mendiola

  • Alex, I am not sure I understand your term “Split”. I do know that we need a better way to display second home addresses for candidates/students with 2 homes. Right now when I pull a list of candidates/students with divorced parents from the candidate lists or the students list, it only pulls home 1 with those salutations. I mark “Home 2” to alert me of another home address and I update my list accordingly. I have to look for home 2 salutations.

The only cases in which we split a shared address (i.e., break the link but leave the information intact) is: a recent graduate returns to be an employee - frequently a part-time coach.

The alum/coach still has a legal home address with the parents while attending college. We split the address and modify the relationship flags as a matter of procedure - not necessity. We want to indicate that there is no longer a custodial relationship.

  • We split addresses if the parents are separated or divorced but did not indicate this (or made an entry error) on the application. The issue we have with split addresses occurs when we invite them to schedule an interview (or send any communication) through an Official Note in ON. It only seems to send to the preferred address, but more often than not, both parents are decision makers and should recieve the email message. It would be great to be able to have the option to send to BOTH addresses. Home and Home 2.

    Thanks
  • Another issue we encounter is parents deleting their shared home address when they attempt to edit it. This causes the shared address to be deleted from all users/family members. And, unfortunately, the warning message parent’s see when they try to delete their address is unclear. The prompt states, “Wait a minute. Are you really sure you want to delete this address information?” It would be more helpful if the warning indicated if their address was being shared by other users and to try editing it first instead of deleting it, etc.

  • Hey everyone, I posted an idea on the BB ideas portal regarding my comment about parents deleting their shared home addresses. The idea is now under consideration. Please check it out and vote if you like it!

  • We really don't have any issues splitting addresses. We sometimes have issues getting the addresses to link. It is frustrating because it is not something I can manually connect. I have to wait for the system to show the existing addresses. If it doesn't, then I am stuck. I would like to have the ability to manually create a link that would override this suggested link mechanism.

This is off topic but related…another issue related to addresses is being able to have additional address types or be able to rename existing address types. I don't really know many schools that have a need for Summer or Winter address types, but I would like to define a PO Box type. We require to know the physical address our students reside (Home or Home 2), but more frequently these days parents want their mail sent to a PO Box. We are forced to define this as a summer or winter address, which is not ideal.

  • @Rick Geyer Hi Rick, How have you managed the issue of recording physical and mailing addresses in BB? How do you request or receive the second address for a family? Our application requires one address and we want to have both mailing and physical if they are different but we are unsure how to request that information. The profile form simply writes over the current address. (I could be doing something wrong with the profile form). Thanks for your info.
