Gift Entry

How do I enter one check for 2 different stocks from the same donor to go to 3 separate funds

  • Hi @Jennifer DePardo!

That's a good question. I'm going to speak a little generally because (I believe) you use Raiser's Edge and I'm using Altru. But I think there are a couple of ways to handle it. I would talk to your finance/accounting team to see what type of detail matters to them in the reporting.

    • Is this one payment/transaction? Or are the two types of stocks considered two payments?
    • Also, I believe you can record the stock symbol, the number of shares, and the price per share. So the second question is: do those details matter to your organization? Do you track that?

I feel like the answers to those questions can help guide you. I think if you need to track the stock information in the proper fields (versus, say, as a note in the Reference field), then I think you should log it as two payments.

Or if it matters to accounting that it appears as two payments.

But otherwise, I think I would log it as one payment. And I probably wouldn't worry about recording the Stock Symbol. It's not a field I really rely on anyway. I'd just make a note in the reference field so I have the details.

If your challenge is more nuts and bolts about to how actually divide the gift between multiple funds, then I probably can't speak to that as well. This may be a situation where you could use the Split Gift function. Having said that, I don't believe I liked doing Split Gifts back when I was using Raiser's Edge. I don't remember exactly why, but I don't think I liked how they appeared in my reports. So I might reach out to your Customer Success Manager or maybe to Support just to see if they have a recommended process for that.

I hope something here helps. Good luck!

    Chris ?
