Historical Gift Totals?

Hey - we are assessing where to add an Historical Gift Total to Raisers Edge (e.g., total amount of giving, prior to the start of using Raisers Edge). Has anyone done this…?

  • We did this for donors to a foundation that we took over. Put in a unique note type so they would be easy to filter in/out of queries, reports, exports, etc. Actually, it was a series of notes based on a summary we were able to export from the old foundation: total, largest, first, last. Same fields we used. We also when adding those people to our database, we gave them unique RE IDs so that they would stand out in reports. For example, during this time, we used a 4-digit number system to precede RE IDs based on each market that we were in. We added a unique 4-digit number in front of the RE ID for these external donors.

If you want the amounts to figure into life time giving, consecutive years, etc. put them in a gift records. I'd recommend this even if you need to create a specific catch all fund to use for the gifts.

At previous position we imported past giving to RE when we converted. Info was on gift tab and viewable/reportable.

Here, they put past/pre-RE giving info in on notes tab. I am unable to pull it into LTG reports or really use in any way. Really pretty useless especially as not all details are included.

  • We didn't add them as gifts because the gifts were given to the other foundation, not ours.

  • I'd put that in Gifts. You could make a Fund that is called Historical Gifts. Seems like the only place to put that info is in Gifts if you want to be able to report, analyze, or for anyone to find it if they are a noob.

  • I would put them in as gifts but use the gift type of “other” so you can either include them or exclude them in reporting. Additionally, I would have a campaign as the other foundation name or a fund with the other foundation name depending on your coding structure.
