Defining Alumni vs withdrawn students

Does anyone have documentation about this at their k-12 school?

  • This is a work in progress for us, a K-12 school. The Alumni role is straight forward for us: if you graduate, you move into the Alumni role.

I created another alumni role “Alumni - 8th Grade” for the subset of students leave for another HS. Many have nine years of connection to the community. They “graduate” with their class and have the Class of that their peers have. This allows alumni relations to say, invite current college students to an event. Additionally, in their Educational record, I add Middle School and the year that they left our school.

We use Past Student for the (smaller) subset of students who did not fit the above with exceptions on a case-by-case basis. For instance, if a student attended K-12 but transferred mid-senior year to another school (family relocated), they will have the designation Alumni. Similarly, If a student attended K-7 and relocated or transfers, they will have the Alumni-8th Grade designation.

To make things even more interesting, we were K-8 until 2000. Anyone who graduated before the HS was established is also an Alumni.
