Applying gift amounts to historical memberships

We have a large number of memberships that never had an associated gift entered in the database. I created an import file from a query of memberships with unlinked gifts but when I go to link the gift to the historical memberships (MEHisImpID) in a second import using Membership History, it is not applying the gift amount to the transaction. I have the MEHisGiftAmt field in my import file. It links the gift to the proper historical membership but the amount applied shows up as $0. If I link the gifts using Membership Linked Gift in import, it applies all of the gifts to the most current membership transaction.

Am I missing something or is it not possible to apply gift amounts after linking them to historical membership transactions?

It has been awhile since I've worked with membership, but I do remember things being persnickety when it came to IDs and memberships.

We had an annual membership, so there was one ID for the original membership assignment, and then a different ID for each year of the membership. It sounds like everything is linking to the most current year, but I think each gift needs to associate to a different ID - the year of that particular membership.

As I said, it has been awhile and I'm not sure I'm explaining this clearly. But it sounds like that might be the issue.
