Address Importing

I rcvd back from our magazine vendor a list of constituents with invalid addresses. I have an import file created to code the old address as such and then blank addresses utilizing the ^ feature for the addresses where there is no valid current address coming back from the vendor. When I run the import, it's giving me the new blank address, adding in the alternate of “old address” for the now no longer valid address we did have, PLUS an additional blank “home” atlernate under the “addresses” tab. Why is it creating another blank address? I'm using option “import records not found as new records”, have the old preferred address import ID for the old one to code as old, and then a generic ID for the new, now blank addresses to show as primary until we get a new. Any advice/help/direction?

@Denise Miller my first thought is that perhaps some of the extensions on the right-hand side of the screen don't match, so RE thinks you want to import some fields for one address and other fields for another address, rather than all fields being related to the same address. If that's not it, maybe you could post a screenshot of the field mapping screen?

I'm intrigued that you add a new blank address for constituents for whom you don't have a current address - we would just change the type to Previous, add an end date and untick Send Mail but I guess as with many things in RE, there are multiple ways to do things depending on your other processes ?

@Denise Miller Ditto, @Alan's comment. A predecessor put in blank address lines. I'm taking them out.

NCOA lists can not match on a blank address. Some vendors look at 3 year list of addresses others can look back farther. As Alan described if one uses correct procedure for marking address not to be used, end date etc. there is no need IMO for blank address.

After I sat here and thought about it, it made sense that once I'm already coding an valid address as an old/alternate - it automatically creates a blank address for an updated one when the time comes to input a new one, so in essence, I was creating that additional as a result. #bbcommunityrocks
