Legacy Giving - What is best to use?

Hi all, I am adding and recording process for my org, what is best practice for planned giving/Legacy giving?? I can see we have the Legacy Gift Record option ( from 2014), however can't see that working in Webview. I don't want to train the team using this way only to have to change it all in a year or maybe less. What do you all suggest, should I use Opportunity and or Prospect management instead( we did this in previous org)??

Thanks in advance for your help?

    There isn't necessarily a single best practice. I think it depends quite a bit on what you know about the planned gift and whether or not you have the Planned Gift module in RE. I believe that is the Legacy Gift Record? The easiest way to find out is to add a gift and see if “Planned Gift” is available in the Gift Type dropdown.

    I also think there are also two separate things to consider:

    • Coding to indicate that someone has left you in their estate plans
    • Coding with details of the intended gift.

    At one organization, which had a robust Planned Giving department, we recorded the fact that a constituent had named us in their estate plans in the Membership module. None of the information about the planned gift itself was entered until it was received.

    At another organization, we recorded membership in the legacy giving society as a constituent attribute. Details about their gift - if we had it - were added as a Pledge with (I think) “Will/Bequest” as a Gift Subtype. It worked well since we used Subtypes sparingly. If / When the gift was received, I believe the plan was to apply it to the Pledge. Their planned giving records were not very good and most of the work I did there was to try and systematize things. I'm not sure I was able to test the realization of the gift since none arrived during my tenure.

    I can see how you might use Opportunities as well. It all depends on the modules you have and the other business processes and coding you are using.

    @Lorraine Hill

    My colleagues use Legacy Gift - but they also primarily use FirstClass to deal with everying relating to legacies.

    They also have an integration between FirstClass and NXT that works through web view but it does have some issues (which might just be particular to our setup) but I don't know whether they still have to enter the Legacy Gifts via database view and it's only the cash gifts that the integration brings through. It certainly doesn't look like you can manually enter Legacy Gifts via webview at present.

    It sounds like you already saw the blog about Legacy Gifts that links to the Blackbaud guide about it.

    Karen Page had a similar query a little while ago, so you could check in with her and see what they went with? I can't get the forum software to ping her directly but this is her post.

    Thank you Rachel, we do have the Legacy Gift option but it's not available in Web view. I will have a think about the best way to move forward for us.

    Thank you for your help, as I suspected all options are possible so I am going to have to think about it and see what fits us best.
