Student/Parent Records Deletion

We are working on a data cleaning project and would like to know how other private schools deal with record deletion/retention in Blackbaud.
I wonder...
-Do you have a student/parent data deletion policy in place?
-How many years does your school retain student or parent data in the database? Or does your school delete the student's data only when parents request it?
