  • @Daniel Wallach - We have a couple of attendance codes we use to report on events, but we do not want them counted toward a student's attendance total. For example, in the Lower School we take attendance by day. Should a student need to leave early, we need to know the student is off campus, but the student was not absent for the day. So we have an attendance category Early Dismissal. Its Type is an “Absence” but it is marked “No” for Use in calculations, so it reports out as a “Not Counted” attendance entry.

    Hope that helps.

@Daniel Wallach - We take attendance by class. Similar to @Scott Chrysler, we have reasons to keep track of students who are not in class because they are on a school-sponsored trip (athletics, field trip, etc) or are involved in an on-campus activity (Upper School choir performing in Middle School Chapel, etc.) We want to know if a student is actually in the scheduled class or not, but we don't want to count those school-sponsored events against the student's totals.

Using these reasons to keep track of absences also allows us to look at the statistics: overall, did students miss more classes for athletic or for performances or for field trips, etc. Having the info can help us see attendance patterns - or refute assumptions about attendance.

  • @Daniel Wallach just adding another use case; we use this option to allow us to code “early dismissals” in our attendance record without affecting the students tardy/ absent totals.

  • @Scott Chrysler @John Bozek @Brian Gray Thanks everyone, this answers my question perfectly,
