Teachers Viewing Student Grades from Other Classes

I was curious to see what other schools are doing for teachers grade view ability so that the teachers are able to view their specific students only class grades for all of that student's current classes. It is not best practice to simply grant all teachers all grade view access for all students. However, granting teachers access so that they can receive a better overall understanding of where the student lies academically does make sense. Example: Teacher notices that “Johnny” starts failing miserably, that teacher can gain insight on is it only their class or is Johnny suddenly failing all classes and that maybe needs to then be handed to counselors.

How is your school's configuration for teachers grade view access to classes that their students belong to but is not that teacher's class? I have been told there is no way to do this and that the only options are to 1) give view all grades access to all teachers or 2) keep it as is, locked down to only the teacher can only see the grades for that one class. I feel maybe there is a workaround using Dorm Supervisors but have not gone down the full rabbit hole yet as I wanted to see what others are doing for this. Thanks!

  • @Chelsea Fritz - are you talking about the Gradebook View? Or Report Card View?
    For Gradebook - we allow any teacher who is an Advisor of a student to view the gradebook entries for that student.
    We create an Advisory role for every homeroom teacher in the Middle School. We then set the default values for the Gradebooks that allows Advisors to view the entrIes. Similarly, our division heads, dean of students, Associate Head of School - etc - all have advisory roles for ALL students in their respective divisions - allowing them to view the Gradebook.
    For Report Cards - I believe that is an all or nothing view.

    @Chelsea Fritz

    For gradebook grades, we do not allow teachers, advisors, dorm supervisors, coaches or parents to see a student's grades in other classes.

    For report card grades, we allow employee access to a student's report cards from the current academic year if the student is currently on the roster for of the employee's class, advisory, dorm, or team.

    If a teacher has concerns about a student's performance, the teacher talks with the advisor, who takes the lead in discussions. (Of course, a teacher can also talk with other teachers, but the advisor is the primary contact.)

  • @Candace Chesler I believe Gradebook view. I do not have much experience with Advisory groups and believe this might be some of my confusion. I would create an advisory group for every teacher here and add advisees for the students of the teacher's classes to each teacher's advisory groups? I think this might work… Thank you so much for the advisory group mention!
