Student Login w/o Email?

For many, many years our students have been able to log in using their Google accounts. It was an easy SSO social login. Just yesterday when new students started arriving they went to sign in and it will no longer allow them to log in without having an email address. Our young students do not have email addresses but do have Google accounts. The reason they cannot log in is because the new sign-on process requires them to receive a confirmation code via email which they do not have.

Is anyone else having this issue? Have you found a workaround? I already have an escalated ticket but have not heard back and I have many classes waiting to log in to do work, see assignments, etc. It is a mess!

@Melika Panneri hey there! No, we would not expect that your returning students would have to verify their email address. We're investigating; I found your support case to reference.

  • @Jessi Walters Thank you! And just to be clear, returning students can log in, but new students cannot without verifying with a code and they can't receive the code because they do not have email.

  • @Jessi Walters We've been having this problem for almost a year and it just hasn't reached the top of my list to address. We end up logging directly into blackbaud.com for each student to confirm their registration. Jessi, if you could help with this it would save TONS of time! Thanks.

  • @Annemarie Merow Thank you! Could you clarify how that works? I do have some students that cannot wait for a solution from BB so if I can get them on with a workaround that would be great.

  • @Melika Panneri Good news! I just tried three LS students - making sure to select “NO” for having the email sent for BBID and I was able to log them in with no problem. I connected two to BBID on their Contact Card and one through Core/Security/BBID Authentication (bulk method) and all three worked! - thank goodness! Definitively different than all of last year! Have you tried in the last few days?

  • @Annemarie Merow Ugh. I don't understand. No matter what I do, I get this.

I used to get that screen but I am not now. In the past I've logged onto Blackbaud.com and signed in as the student. After that, the student was able to log into our BB site.

    See if that helps!

@Melika Panneri Here's a breakdown of relevant info:

    • The former BBID system (before the “migration”) would require NEW Sign in with Google users to confirm their email address. That was expected.
    • The new BBID system (after the “migration” in May) should not require Sign in with Google users to confirm their email address - regardless of whether they are new or returning.

Your Support agent is sending the Support ticket to John Vogel's BBID team to address, and I'll ask for an expedited resolution on it. Meanwhile, since you mentioned your students can't wait for that, I would consider establishing a single sign-on (SSO) connection with your school's Google domain. Users on SSO bypass the confirm-your-email workflow altogether.

The migrated SSO experience for Google connections is currently in the Early Adopter Program (EAP) so it isn't available for everyone* just yet. However, we have added you to the EAP group so you don't have to wait for it to be Generally Available (GA). Just go to blackbaud.com > Admin > Security > Authentication settings and you'll see a new box on the page to establish an SSO connection. Email me with any questions.

*Admins at any school who are interested in joining the EAP for early access to the new, migrated SSO setup can email me at jessica {dot} walters {at} blackbaud {dot} com.

  • @Jessi Walters Thank you very much! I will check it out now.
