Usage of Fund Types and Categories

We are in the process of revising our use of Fund Categories and Fund Types. Would anyone be able to share their active table entries for Fund Categories and Types and any documentation you have? We are a Higher Education institution but are also looking to see other's hierarchy and usage of the fields.

@Brandon Stein For Fund Categories we use Restricted, Unrestricted, or Endowment. We are a healthcare organization, so the types are based on centers of excellence.

Our Fund type list is longer - primary related to different campus departments or offices. Used as sort field for donation reports among other financial reports.

We also utilize an attribute of ‘fund owner’ to filter funds held by our office and those held by athletic club which also uses our database. Before we merged we also had alumni owned funds.

@Brandon Stein Because our organizations has SO MANY FUNDS, we use categories of Capital, Programmatic, Endowment, Fundraising Events, Membership and Temporary Holding, since we report on these and it makes it easier to have fund queries of each of these so it makes reporting so easy by linking the query to a report as opposed to constantly remember which funds belong to which and then the query updates each time a new fund is created.

  • @Brandon Stein we are in the midst of a similar project. Knowing that webview does not have the Fund Type field we are focusing on consolidating our fund categories to align with our board reports and reporting needs. As a result our category list is Annual Giving, Capital, Endowment, Financial Aid and Tax Credit. We have created a custom field for Fund Type that can then (hopefully) be used in our insights in NXT, but at the very least can be exported and sorted on. For instance, in Financial Aid we would include all Scholarship, Tuition Assistance and Tax Credit funds)
