The Buzz: Mt. Everest Edition

Good Morning Community,

Where's the highest point you've ever climbed to in the world?  Local mountains?  Maybe you've made a special trip or two to go hiking somewhere special.  But have you ever set your sights so high that the world paid attention?  That's exactly what Nirmal “Nims” Purja did when he recently completed high quest of climbing all 14 of the world’s 8,000-metre-high mountains.  Only he didn't do it in a lifetime; He did it ALL within 189 days!

So this week's question is this; What's YOUR Mt. Everest?  What's the peak that you're looking to climb?  Let us know below in the comments.

Comments

  • Nirmal “Nims” Purja is impressive!   In 1989, I climbed Huashan in China, which has multiple mountain tops all around 2000 meters.  This mountain range is a day off excursion for many of the locals.  The locals were wearing their dress up shoes (yes high heels), while I was in hiking boots and carrying a heavy back pack full of "essential camping stuff". The locals stayed up all night, playing music, drinking, snacking, telling stories, and laughing.  At 6 am, they watched the sun come up, then hiked back down.  My friends and I listened in on the festivities, but  kept to our American ways, pulled out heavy sleeping bags, ate canned food and tried to get to sleep, but those people knew how to party!!   It was an eye opening experience to cultural differences.
  • I've done two "14ers" in a single day in Colorado (Grays Peak and Torreys Peak.)

But my personal Everest?  That's hard - probably to teach my cats to play fetch. :)
  • I'm a bit of an acrophobe, so climbing isn't my thing. So instead I take challenges horizontally instead of vertically. So far I've hiked two sections of the Paul Bunyan trail, and rode my bike 150 miles from Duluth to the Cities over the course of two days. I did push my limits and completed a ropes course, but that took all my nerve and had me sweating and shaking. So I think I'll stay earthbound, but I'll go as far as my legs will take me, if that counts.
  • Not sure how community screening works, so I am posting here for you, since you seem to be an actual BB employee. I received a very inappropriate email this morning from Kevin Piterson with "Instant Alert" in the header. It seems that there should be a way to prevent this sort of thing. It's subject title was asking if ED can be reversed, so even that should have prevented it from coming through.

  • Thank you VERY much for alerting us, AnnMarie.  I will gladly handle this issue for you and contact you via direct message immediately.
