Group attendance overwriting students that already have attendance entry

Does anyone have a workaround for Athletic group attendance overwriting students that have an existing attendance entry? Example: student has absent - vacation entry for a period of a week already added. BUT when the Athletic team attendance gets added as a group entry it overwrites the vacation entry. The person adding the group attendance has no way to see that a student already has the vacation entry?
