addressee and salutation in RE
Hello community friends!
We are a high school community with large alumni base. When merging letters, we have always used the 'married graduate' addressee/salutation from individual, otherwise use the 'primary' option. We have decided that letters going to married households should use Mr & Mrs formatting. Not all records have an identified Mr & Mrs add/sal though.
Is there a way to accomplish this by choosing the 'from configuration' option when setting up the letter export? If the constituent is a female, can this be set up to show Mr & Mrs, not Mrs & Mr?
Or is it better to add a new add/sal type to appropriate records? Then when merging letters that would be the first choice, otherwise use 'primary'? Or is there another option?
I've read numerous KB articles and researched the community but am still unsure as to the best practice for this.
Thanks for your help with this!

If constituent is a female, my experience has been that it requires choosing a different add/sal format/formula than if the person is a male.
IMO, I like having a add/sal type named to hold that joint names format. Use Smart formula and it drops the spouse for single individuals. No need for separate entry. Besides the male/female requiring different formula you'll have couples with different last names and or one is hyphenated.
I can't recall off the top of my head what results you can get from configuration options when setting up the letter export. It would make sense that you could use that but be aware of the exceptions noted above. Not able to test it right now.
Just some thoughts.3 -
Thank you JoAnn.
This is a huge undertaking, so I want to approach it in

Agree 100% with JoAnn Strommen - set up the add sal on each record as it should read. Although maybe 80% of the situations will be the same, there are a decent number of exceptions -
people who go by a first initial and middle name, people who go by a middle name, use of maiden name in combination with married name, etc. I tried initially in a school to allow the system to do it for me, and it did not work.
It is a big undertaking to get them all corrected, but it saves a lot of daily hassle. I'm a big fan of investing work up front because you usually net out at less time in the end.

I also agree with JoAnn about setting up joint addressees and salutations (and making sure the business rules are set up for these to be checked, if someone is marked deceased) - there are so many different configurations that it's very handy to sit down, think about all the different combinations first and the set it all up the one time and then for new records make sure they get set up as you go. There's bound to be one or two weird cases and those can be dealt with individually too!1
