exporting Head of Household flag

I've reviewed the Knowledge Base information about how to export the head of household flag as part of a constituent export (see: https://kb.blackbaud.com/articles/Article/39345?_ga=2.62729644.1060434001.1609950306-2122619233.1601387746), but I don't know how to determine what parameters to use for steps 3 and 4. Can anyone help? How do I determine the number of individual relationships to export and whether or not to filter on Selected Individual Relations?

The constituent list I'm pulling includes assigned individuals and I want to be able to identify who on the list is classified as the head of household.

Hi Stephanie Hughes‍, this is a bit convoluted since as you found you can't directly export the HOH flag for a particular constituent, just for their relationships. There seem to be two ways you could get at this information still though.

First, if for example you are looking to see which spouse is the HOH, I would select 1 for the number of individuals to export and then for selected inidividual relations I would choose Spouse. Then when you export, if the spouse relationship record does not have the HOH flag then you know the main constituent is the HOH. Not straight forward and if you are looking at more than just spouses you will want to increase the number of relationships to export and the individual relations to include.

Second option would be to export the assigned individuals with their Import ID and separately create a query with the criteria simply being "This individual is the Head of Household equals yes" (you can use step 2 in the KB article to navigate there). In the output of that query make sure you have Individual Relation Import ID and This Individual is the Head of Household. Export that from the query and use a VLOOKUP to add the HOH flag to your export of assigned individuals.

Neither is all that clean, but a couple of ideas. Maybe someone else out there has an easier solution.

First, do you actually need the flag, because if you set up the Export on the General tab to “export only Constituents marked Head of Household”, you will obtain the records you need. If you actually need the HOH flag field, it gets a bit more complicated if you have HOH relationships that go beyond “Spouse”. Then you should determine the values for that relationship that constitute the HOH (Spouse, Partner, Significant Other or whatever values you have), so would step #3 you would enter 1 and step #4 you would select the individual relationship values in criteria that constitute your HOH relationship values.
