Initial Department Setup

I am working with a school that is implementing Blackbaud On Products for their SIS and LMS. They are migrating from a system that allowed for a department name with a subject, e.g. Languages - Spanish as the department name. What are the best praactices for accomplishing this? I believe department should be the general heading, Languages and then courses should be listed under the department.

Second question that follows is how will the reporting go if they just want to see how many students in Spanish have a certain characteristic. We want to set up such that dashboards reflect information that they wish to obtain.

  • We are a K-12 school that offers “World” Languages in our upper grades. As a part of our core education, however, all students take Hebrew (K-12). I set up Hebrew as its own department and a separate World Language department for our Spanish and French courses. IMO, I would be guided by the administrative structure at the school. If there are multiple department chairs, i.e., Spanish, Chinese, etc., I would follow that and set up departments in parallel.
