Coming Soon! Introducing a New SKY API Free Developer Tier

Published

To support the growth of the SKY Developer Community, we are realigning the SKY API benefits to better support our customers and Blackbaud Partners in the ISV program, while enabling all developers in our ecosystem to get started with SKY API.

What are the SKY API benefits?

Anyone with a Blackbaud ID is eligible to sign up for a SKY Developer account. With a SKY Developer account, you have the following basic benefits:

  • Obtain a SKY API subscription key, required to make SKY API requests.
  • Create SKY applications, required for the OAuth 2.0 authorization protocol.
  • The applications created can be connected to multiple customer environments.

What is changing?

Starting in January 2025, we are introducing a new "Free Developer" tier that will provide all developers with a base level of SKY API benefits. The Free Developer tier enables anyone, regardless of customer or partner status, to learn SKY API and test apps using a free shared developer environment. Customers and partners will have distinct tiers to receive increased benefits.

Limits will be introduced for the number of apps each developer account can create, as well as the number of environments each app can be connected to. The limits will be set for each tier.

What are the limits for each tier?

SKY API Benefit Free Customer Partner
Daily API quota limit 1k (total) 25k (total) 100k (per connection)
App creation limit 5 10 50
App connection limit 10 10 Unlimited

What do I need to do to prepare for this change?

To ensure that customers and partners are receiving the right benefits, the individual developer accounts and the apps they create must be assigned to a developer team, which is the representation of your customer or partner organization in the SKY Developer Portal. If your developer account and apps are assigned to the team, then you will receive the associated benefits. If your developer account or apps are not assigned to the team, they will receive the Free tier benefits.

When will this change happen?

We are planning to introduce the app connection and app creation limits by the end of January 2025. The API quota limit will be introduced at a later date in Q1.

What if my app connections are over the limits?

We will not be disconnecting any existing connections when the new limits are introduced. However, if the app is over the limit, it cannot be connected to more environments until the connection count is below the limit. You can see the number of connections to your app from the View environments page.

What if I've created more apps than the limit?

If your developer account is over the app limit, i.e., you are the owner of more apps than the limit, you can keep the apps that have been created but you will not be able to create more apps. You are still able to be added as a contributor to more apps, i.e., the apps that you are a contributor of do not count towards your limit.

What if I already have the Standard API subscription that enables 25k API calls?

If you are not part of a customer or partner team, and currently have the Standard API subscription, you may keep using it after the new limits are in place. However, new developers who are not part of a customer or a partner team will only be entitled to the Free Developer tier limits of 1K API calls per day.

@Lindsey Rix shared some great information in this discussion as well that I think answers a lot of questions. Thanks Lindsey!

Hi friends! Is the App Creation Limit per Developer Account? For example, if we currently have 15 Apps (ie Projects) on one developer account, can we simply create multiple developer accounts and spread our projects among them? The article says “Limits will be introduced for the number of apps each developer account can create”

Thanks!

Yes, the app creation limit is per developer account. If you have more apps per developer account than the limit, you can transfer apps to other developer accounts in your organization. However, we don’t recommend creating multiple developer accounts per person since it can make it harder to manage.

If you need it, here's the documentation on how to transfer application ownership.

Is there a limit to the number of Add-ins inside a single application for customer?

At this time, we don't have an official limit stated, however there is a code limit high enough where most people won't hit it. When I have more details, I'll respond.
My apologies as this is a quiet week in the office with most on PTO for the US Thanksgiving holiday.
