Insights And Trends From The Giving USA 2018 Report

Published
As a proud member organization of the Giving Institute, Blackbaud is excited to announce the publication of the Giving USA 2018 report. Giving USA is the longest-running report of charitable giving in the United States and has been an important tool for nonprofit professionals to understand what is happening across the sector. The latest Giving USA report provides additional details about charitable giving and philanthropic trends in aggregate from our own Charitable Giving Report.

Published annually for over 60 years, Giving USA has been the go-to resource for donors, fundraisers, and nonprofit leaders to learn about charitable giving. I’m sure you’ll be hearing a lot about it in the next few weeks!

The study provides the most comprehensive data on giving to all charitable organizations and key trends across the United States.
This year, there’s some exciting news coming out of the report:

For the first time ever, charitable giving exceeded the $400 billion mark in 2017, spurred by growth from all four sources of giving, particularly giving by individuals, who increased their giving by $14.47 billion in 2017.

Some additional key points:

  • Both Giving USA and the Blackbaud Institute continue to show single digit growth rates on a year-over-year basis.
  • Online giving continues to grow at double digit rates. Through April 2018, online giving was up more than 10.6% on a year-over-year basis.
  • Despite the increase in charitable giving, donor acquisition, retention, engagement, and stewardship remain the most important factors to drive charitable giving.

This type of sector research helps give organizations an opportunity to compare their own performance to broader trends.  This year, the Blackbaud Institute is hosting a free series of webinars that dive deep into specific verticals, including higher education, arts and cultural, faith-based, and more. We want to give you the opportunity to get the insight that matters most to you with experts from across the sector.

You can sign up for the webinar series here.

With the increases in mobile donations, will we see OLX forms shrinking any (for quicker giving)?

I wonder what drove the increase in giving to foundations that resulted in such a high growth rate. Anyone have a chance to read to full report and know if they have any insight into what was behind that?

I had the privilege of attending a local briefing on the report here in the Cincinnati area, and one of the big picture takeaways for me related to donor-advised funds. It makes sense that in our culture more and more donors are calling the shots for their DAF distributions; few leave their donations up to the institution's discretion, though they still accept advice, too.

In American society today the message of empowerment seems to resound more and more, so it's not a big surprise that this idea impacts these donors, too.
