Using History to Shape Our Future

Published
We are not makers of history. We are made by history.” – Martin Luther King, Jr.

History is not just a subject we learn in school. It’s not just an interesting movie. History shapes us. It shapes how we face the world, how we make decisions, and how we function as a society.

Major events in history can help us realize weaknesses, change our perspective, and renew our investments in a common goal.
This is true in the fundraising world as well. We can review our history to see times when we had great successes and failures. We need to learn from our accomplishments and mistakes along the way.

Peer-to-peer fundraising has evolved quickly over the last few years. When we look back to the beginning of peer-to-peer, and then view how we use it today, we can see many milestones and accomplishments.

...the more you know about the past, the better prepared you are for the future.” – Theodore Roosevelt

As you prepare for the future, make sure you are equipped with knowledge. Take time to review past milestones and make decisions on how you will achieve those going forward. Utilize all your fundraising tools such as everydayhero Pro to their fullest capacity.

If you are new to everydayhero Pro or need to brush up on your skills, check out the Blackbaud Learn® training offerings. One of the best tools offered with Blackbaud Learn is the on-demand eLearning library. These lessons are self-paced and allow you to learn at the speed that works best for you. Our eLearning course, Basics of everydayhero Pro  includes a brief lesson on the history of peer-to-peer fundraising. It also includes great information on accessing everydayhero and describes the basics of a fundraiser page.

So open your calendar and block an hour of time this week! Use that hour to look back and analyze. What has worked for your organization? What hasn’t worked? What are your supporters expecting from you? Let your history guide your decisions for how you proceed in the future.

Life can only be understood backwards; but it must be lived forwards.” – Soren Kierkegaard
