Good Morning Community!


Did you set your alarm over the past few days to wake up in the middle of the night and catch the Perseids Meteor Shower?  Most of the Northern Hemisphere was exposed to the event within the last 48 hours, and the peak was this morning (August 13) at around 3-5am.  Do you have access to the unfiltered sky?  Are you an amateur astronomer yourself?  We'd love to hear about your star-gazing experiences below as you reach for the stars!

I've been an amateur astronomer and astrophotographer pretty much all my life (49 years!).  I've photographed meteor showers, aurorae, constellations, planets, the moon, etc. - all with just a 35mm or digital SLR camera.  No fancy lenses, scopes or clock drives.  I look forward to the Perseids every year as one of the best meteor showers for meteor frequency (up to 100 per hour or more some years), spotting fireballs, and hopefully actually hearing a fireball.  Yes, hearing!  Only once have I heard a meteor burning up as it passed overhead.  It was a big one - I'd classify it as a fireball - but not big enough to make it to the ground before completely disintegrating.  It whistled, not very loudly, but you couldn't mistake the source of the sound.  In my neck of the woods, evening skies have been cloudy.  Hoping for clear skies soon!
