Can You Be Too Comfy with Technology?

Published
My teenage daughter recently showed me a setting on my iPhone that made my life a little easier. I thought for sure I had discovered the best way to use everything on that little device, but low and behold – now I can adjust the volume with a just a flick of my thumb. Mind blown.451196146f9b5a977db16487c5c4c60b-huge-ph

How did I miss this nifty feature? Because I got comfortable. I thought I knew everything I needed to know and didn't bother to learn anything new. Yes, my iPhone worked, but was I using it to its fullest capacity? No.

Technology has a way of fooling us into thinking we’re being effective and efficient. What does being effective and efficient mean?

  • ef·fec·tive: adjective, successful in producing a desired or intended result
  • ef·fi·cient: adjective, working in a well-organized and competent way
If those words ended up on my annual performance review, I would be over the moon. Isn’t that really what our goal should be – to work effectively and efficiently?

A prof of mine used to quote:  Efficient is doing the thing right.  Effective is doing the right thing.
