DELAYED: New Year and New Look for Digital Wallets in Blackbaud Checkout

Important Update on Digital Wallets in Blackbaud Checkout

As we recently announced, Visa and MasterCard are joining forces to provide a one-click digital wallet solution that adheres to EMVCo’s new standard for EMV Secure Remote Commerce (SRC). That solution will combine Masterpass and Visa Checkout—two of our three digital wallet options available to Blackbaud Merchant Services™ customers using Blackbaud Checkout—into one payment (or “click-to-pay”) button.

The switch from Masterpass and Visa Checkout to this new payment button was intended to happen on January 21, 2020. However, Blackbaud was just notified that the card brands are delaying the transition to the new button and has not yet provided a revised timeline for when the new offering will be available.

What It Means
There is no impact to Blackbaud Merchant Services customers using Apple Pay or Visa Checkout. Transactions submitted through these digital wallets will continue to process as usual without interruption and your constituents can select them as they do today.

Masterpass, however, will be temporarily hidden on your Blackbaud Checkout forms. Our engineering teams are working diligently to restore access to this wallet and availability will, once again, resume during the week of January 27, 2020.

Next Steps
We will continue to update you as we learn more about the card brands’ revised timeline for making the new click-to-pay option available to our customers.

Since 2016, overall giving has grown by 9% and online giving has increased by 17% in the US. With more constituents showing their support through web and mobile payments, there’s an even greater need to simplify the checkout experience.

Using Blackbaud NetCommunity, your organization can take advantage of Blackbaud Checkout. This streamlined and mobile responsive payment form also supports one-time digital wallet transactions—via Apple Pay, Masterpass, and Visa Checkout—for customers using Blackbaud Merchant Services™.

In 2020, however, several of those wallets are getting a new look. The major card brands, including Visa® and MasterCard®, have joined forces to provide a one-click digital wallet solution that adheres to EMVCo’s new standard for EMV Secure Remote Commerce (SRC). This solution combines Masterpass and Visa Checkout into one payment (or click-to-pay) button, eliminating the need for your constituents to remember passwords on “trusted devices” and reducing the fields required to complete a transaction.

As a result, your organization will benefit from a more consistent checkout experience, improved conversion rates, and increased security. And, in the future, you’ll be able to take advantage of digital wallets from other card brands like American Express®.

What You Need to Know

U.S. Customers
On January 21, 2020, Visa will replace Visa Checkout with the SRC button shown above. In addition, Masterpass will no longer be a separate button and, instead, users can use their existing Masterpass accounts within the SRC workflow. These changes are going to happen automatically in all Blackbaud Checkout-enabled forms and there is no action you must take.

Constituents clicking the SRC button will see a new login screen, allowing them to sign up.

Alternatively, if they have an existing Masterpass or Visa Checkout account, they can log in as a returning user and access it—and their stored cards—using the email address on file (Both MasterCard and Visa note that some payment cards may need to be re-entered as part of this transition).

To prepare your constituents, the card brands have notified account holders of the upcoming change.

For Apple Pay users, the payment experience is the same. Apple Pay will remain a separate button within Blackbaud Checkout. As a reminder, it is displayed as a payment option only when your constituents access a website using the Safari browser on an Apple device.

Customers Outside the U.S.
The new SRC button will also replace the Visa Checkout and Masterpass buttons in international regions. To date, Visa and MasterCard have not informed cardholders outside of the US of this upcoming change. However, they will ramp up their communication efforts in the coming months.
