The Giving Score Blog Series: Issue 4

Published
In last week’s issue, I highlighted The Giving Score video tutorials, available through Training Central, and covered best practices for helping your solicitors leverage The Giving Score.

I've been in San Diego at the AFP International Conference thinking about what to discuss in this week’s blog. I talked to so many Raiser’s Edge customers this week and answered many questions about The Giving Score.  In my experience, if one person has a question, others have the same question but aren't compelled to ask.  So for this week's blog, here are the some of the frequently asked questions (and answers) from the conference:

Note: These questions are a little more technical than the questions I answered in the first issue of this blog series.

Can I manually override a Giving Score rating on the constituent record? If I do, what happens to it the next time I run The Giving Score?

Yes, you can manually update The Giving Score rating. You will see the new score on the constituent record and the original score can be seen on the Ratings tab for historical purposes.  When you run The Giving Score again, the score will not be updated.

How is The Giving Score specific to my organization?

The Giving Score takes the giving history and home addresses of your donors along with external, publicly available data like demographics and credit information to determine likelihood and capacity to give.

I have too many VIPs to manage. How can I narrow them down?

You can use queries to further segment your VIPs. You can create “levels” of VIPs by categorizing them by giving range. For example, you might want to identify donors that have given  more than $1,000 from those that have given less than $1,000. If you have a major giving program, you could also segment those donors that have an assigned solicitor from those that do not.

Why are some non-donors being scored as VIPs?

If a non-donor or low giver scores as a VIP, it could be because he matches the other characteristics in the algorithm and “looks like” your other major donors. We recommend that you take a closer look at these individuals because they do match on both likelihood and capacity.
