Very few of us can be master chefs. Just ask Sam (not his real name), my brother’s college roommate who consistently burned instant mac ‘n’ cheese. If Sam ever dreams of sushi, it’s probably going to be a nightmare for the rest of us.

That being said, almost anyone can be a decent cook with three special ingredients: sugar, salt, and fat. Want to take your tomato sauce to the next level? Add a bit of sugar to bring out the sweetness of the tomatoes. Butter gives fish and vegetables a level of flavor that you just can’t get with oil alone. And don’t even get me started on salt, which is so important that it’s a supporting character in a classic children’s story. Even in the hands of a beginner, these three ingredients can elevate the taste of any dish.

In a similar way, you can transform your eTapestry database with a basic understanding of three concepts, which we’ve used to structure our revamped Fundamentals series:
  • Accounts: Store information about your supporters (relationships, addresses, etc.)

     
  • Journals: Keep track of interactions with your supporters (donations, meetings, and more)

     
  • Queries: Group supporters for reporting, mailing, and much more
Just like cooking, if you master these three areas of your database, you’re well on your way to making something wonderful.
