Overhauling the "Purpose" dropdown menu in Opportunities

We are going to be updating the "Purpose" dropdown menu in our Opportunities - there are currently too many. Does anyone have guidance, particularly for the education sector - on how many options is standard? What buckets are most often used?

    @Alena Kaufman We have gone super simple and use this field to ID which team is creating the opportunity (Capital campaign/grant proposal/major gift/planned giving/public grant), and then use fund to drill down. Although I can see how we'd be able to use campaign to drill down instead.

    We used to use Campaign, but, realized the thing we needed most was a quick indicator of whether it was going to be a one time gift, or a multiyear pledge. So now, we just have Annual and Pledge so that we can really quickly get that information. (We do also have a Legacy purpose and Windows purpose as those are two specific types of ask we have that we want to ensure we can easily exclude from Lists and that's the easiest way to do so.) Because of the way our appeal/fund combos work, all our other reporting buckets were covered.
