Holiday Cards - are people still sending them?
Holiday Cards - are people still sending them?
If so, what is your typical messaging?
If not, if you used to why did you stop?

@Elizabeth Johnson Great questions, Elizabeth, and aligns with one I am about to post myself.
We do still send Holiday Cards, and I'll be honest, I'm not even sure if we've ever measured their effectiveness (or how to begin measuring that).
I don't know what percentage of my generation I speak for, but I generally throw away most physical mail that I'm not expecting. At most, I give things a quick glance to make sure it's not a bill or something important. Either way, 95% of what I receive in the mail ends up in the trash immediately.

@Elizabeth Johnson I'm curious what others do as well. We still send physical cards in the mail. There's no way to truly measure how effective they are, but we send them to people we consider our top/loyal donors. So, donors over a certain amount, monthly recurring donors, and those with planned gifts as well as key volunteers, etc. It is an expense, but we feel it's important to mail things that don't have an ask associated with it - especially headed into the end of the calendar year when we have a lot of solicitations by mail and email. We just send good wishes for the holiday season and new year. We spread them among staff to sign special messages to people and have a more generic message for those we don't know well.

@Chris Fedor Just an idea (for tracking purposes), you could pull your list of addresses (with Constituent or Import ID) as well as Last/Avg Yearly Gift information. Separate them out by monthly donors, annual donors, lapsed, etc or however you want to judge “success.” Then do a mass action upload (we use import-o-matic) for all of those people. Once the year is over, you could go back and pull a query of all the mass action people from that date and look at their Last Gift Date, Amount, Avg Gift, etc. Then you could see how many lapsed donors gave, annual donors gave versus previous gifts, etc. That would take a little effort, but could probably give you a good idea of the value of that campaign.
There's a few ways to do it, but this is one way that could be helpful! Just a thought!

@Elizabeth Johnson, we send holiday cards. As a religious org, it aligns so well with our mission, and it's one of the only genuine “thinking of you” touches that our low-level donors receive, so we feel it has value. Being a monastery, our message is probably not one others could replicate well: "Our monks will be praying a novena for you on the nine days leading up to Christmas."
Anecdotally, we've received positive feedback from donors on the mailings. We operate our own printery house, so our costs are reduced; however, I know it does have price attached, and some organizations with a different mission might not see the same benefits.
Our top 400 donors get a hand-addressed, hand-signed card, so pretty sure those get opened. And our top 200 get personal notes written in their cards. Society members all get Thanksgiving cards ("thankful for you"). We use the four major religious holidays (Easter, All Souls, Thanksgiving, Christmas) as rallying points, often paired with visits, for our 3 personal touches per donor per year.

At our Foundation we are still hand writing Holiday cards and each member signing them, we also try to send Birthday cards to our Board members. Our volunteer services also sends out monthly hand written birthday cards to our members. Just a short message letting them know we are thinking of them and appreciate them.
