Recording donors who give to other orgs, that also benefit your org
I wasn't sure how to frame this question, so I'll give a little history first.
Illinois has a Tax Credit Scholarship program. Donors give to approved "Scholarship Granting Organizations" (SGO) to benefit a scholarship program so low-income students can attend a private school and in return, the donor gets a 75% tax credit on that donation (the SGO reports to the state so the donor can get their tax credit. The donation is not eligible for a federal deduction). In many cases, the donors who give to this program are donors/alums of private schools (I work at a Catholic School who benefits from this) and can restrict their money to make sure students who attend that school get that scholarship money.
An example, a donor/alum gives to the SGO to benefit students at the school where I work. But the money technically comes from the SGO and isn't recorded in RE at all because it's a scholarship payment. We want to keep track of those donors so we're not asking for a gift equal to that which they gave the SGO. We are looking for a way to record this in Raiser's Edge. My first idea was to enter a $0 donation with a gift reference/note of the amount given to the organization. But I'm not sure that's the best way to approach it (plus I'm not sure the CFO would approve). Would a note, attribute, or action be a better approach?

If you have the prospect module, you could try the Gifts to Other Organizations section, or if you aren't using the appeals tab for much else, that could work too.0

We track SGO donations that are made payable to our scholarship granting organizations as gift type “other” in Raisers Edge and we leave them unposted. This allows us to see the activity without recognizing the income.0

I'm still new to many of the modules, as my last position only had the most basic version of RE7, so I didn't even realize this was an option. And I like that you can view it easily in NXT. Thank you!

We are part of The Feeding America family and some of our donors give to FA. I get a report from FA with donor and gift info. I add them with a "House Prospect" solicit code and an attribute of "Source" > FA Donor with gift amt in the comment field.0

We use attributes to mark the constituent and put the amount in the comments for reference. We recognize them in our donor report and invite them to a breakfast where a recipient student speaks to the group.0
