Benevity and Gift Aid

We are a UK-based charity that receives donations via Benevity. For some of the supporters who donate via Benevity, we received Gift Aid from another organisation, Charitable Giving, on behalf of Benevity.

There are NO reports available and the most information we can get is from Charitable Giving who are able to tell us the time period of the donations that the Gift Aid has been claimed for and Benevity can only tell us that it applies to donations made with BlueSnap as the payment source.

This is probably a question for other UK organisations only but how do you deal with it? We can figure it out who the Gift Aid should be credited to when there is only one supporter with that payment source during the stated time period (although I'm not sure that we are receiving all of the Gift Aid due for those donation amounts) but it's extremely difficult when there is more than one supporter as neither Benevity nor Charitable Giving will tell us anything.

  • I guess it is different in the US. We are able to pull a report from Benevity on the web which tells us the donor, matching gift co., whether the gift is a donation or a match for a donation. However, the report tends to be available a week or so later then the funds are transferred.

It works like that for us too and then several months later we get additional payment from Charitable Giving on behalf of Benevity which is a Gift Aid payment. The Gift Aid scheme is a thing in the UK where charities can claim back the tax that the donor had already paid on that amount - so this is an additional payment we get but it doesn't apply to all of the donations we get through Benevity.

I would love if Benevity had an extra column on their report that was just "GIft Aid y/n?" and then 3 months later when we received the additional money we might be able to match it to the correct person.
  • Right--the delay is not helpful. What do you use as the gift/post dates?

We use the date that the payment arrives in our account - for the original donation, our supporters are aware that it takes at least a month for us to receive their donations via Benevity.

For this Gift Aid payment, it's not an issue because it's something we kind of collect "silently" on the donations we receive (we collect this ourselves from HMRC on eligible donations we receive directly) so at least there's no expectation of an acknowledgement for Gift Aid.
