When was the last time you were in the wilderness?
I pondered this question recently when I read about a very large area of New Mexico being donated to the Bureau of Land Management. It got me thinking; When was the last time I was really out in “The Wild”? Admittedly, it has been quite a while, and I am to change that soon.
How about you? When was the last time you were out in the wilderness?

Like much of the middle of the US, Minnesota is in a severe drought. My little family of three decided to take our first ever family camping trip to a state park at the end of June. It rained all weekend! We still had fun, even though our rain fly leaked into the tent. It stopped raining when we came home and MN continued to be in severe drought. So, we are considering another camping trip to make it rain again. ?

I am so fortunate to live in Michigan, which always has green wild areas. The state has the longest freshwater coast in the U.S. and you are never more than six miles from a natural water source, so it's not hard to get in the wilderness within minutes.

I lived in ABQ, NM. 15 years as a fundraiser for several nonprofits. My favorite month there is in October during the International Hot Air Balloon Festival and the delightful smell of green and red chilies roasting in the early morning. If you love to ski I recommend Santa FE (12,000 ft highest slope) and Taos. With low humidity, high altitude, and not many bugs, camping is a great experience.

Hi Ashley,

This question brings up wonderful childhood memories of Girl Scout Camps, Church Camps, going fishing with my parents where my grandparents grew up, running through the woods with my cousins, going hiking with family at Hanging Rock or more recently biking with family on the Virginia Creeper Trail. I do not travel much but I am enjoying reading what others have commented and reminiscing of my childhood. Great question!

I live in Upstate NY and we have some beautiful state parks. Watkins Glen State Park is just gorgeous. So many waterfalls along the trails and gorges. Ithaca has several state parks with waterfalls and gorges as well. I call these parks a little slice of heaven!

I am in Utah and surrounded by great places to go hiking, which I try to do on weekend - or at least when the temperatures are not at 100. :-)

Utah is so beautiful. I have only visited once, but I plan to go back one day.

Our last real vacation before the pandemic was to the Galapagos Islands. Truly amazing!

I went to the mountains in NC in May. So beautiful!

The last time I was in the true wilderness was about three years ago on a camping trip to Caprock Canyon State Park in Texas where we hiked while trying to avoid the wild bison that roam the area.

We went to Grand Lake, CO last summer - rented a cabin and took the kids on some of the easy trails. But I don't really consider that “the wild”: sure, there were “watch out for mountain lion” signs posted around and the elk stared at us from the roadside driving by; but there was always easy access to bathrooms, we slept on beds, and we never ventured more than a half mile from the tourist strip while hiking.
So the last time I was really out in “the wild” would have been about 6 years ago, when my husband and I camped out in a little primitive camping spot in southern Missouri. No bathrooms, gravel road, and watch out for poison ivy! It was great until we made camp for the night in a cloth tent and my one-year-old started wailing. There were coyotes howling out in the night. At that point, the cloth tent seemed really flimsy, and my daughter was basically advertising, “Come eat me please!” So we decided to wait till the kids are all older, before venturing back into "the wild” again.

I live near the beach, so we go to the ocean pretty frequently (in the evening, as the tourists are heading to dinner) but that is nature, not wilderness. Too many people. So - we're going to the NC mountains for a week! I will be working remotely while my family goes out to play, then I'll be joining them in the evenings. We're all ready to get a break from the heat and see some hills! While it's not as dramatic as the Rocky Mountains, there is majesty to be found in the Smokies.

@Pam Kroyer - YES! I love Utah and I'm so glad one of my best friends moved there. It's the perfect excuse to visit over and over. Do you like Southern Utah or Northern Utah better?
