How are you celebrating Black History Month this year?

Celebrations and reflections of Black History Month have begun for many today, including those of us here at Blackbaud! This year we would love to see or hear about the ways members of the Blackbaud Community are celebrating. Share your organization’s photos or ideas below!

  • My organization has no such plans. Would like to see how other organization celebrate.

  • Our school has a month long celebration planned including many interesting speakers, a multicultural arts celebration, a poetry slam, and movies. Our students have also made many posters that are hung around the school celebrating important figures and historical quotes. It's great to see our community come together around this important theme in February.

  • My organization does some social media posting.

Personally, I always get my kid some new books for Black History Month. For any education organizations out there, my kiddo really enjoyed and learned from John Lewis's graphic novel trilogy March.

Thanks for sharing @Sunshine Watson! Social media is a great way to bring awareness to the topic. I love the idea of introducing a new book to your child…it's a great way to encourage conversation and learning.

Our org itself does not do anything special. The university has hosted a speaker and/or a couple of events.

Hi @JoAnn Strommen. Thanks for the reply. Have you had a chance to listen to any of the speakers? If so, did anything stand out to you about the speech or the speaker?

  • I celebrate Black History Month by reflecting on my culture and engage in as many events online or not to show community love and support.

This is great activity @Cara Beals. Sometimes we learn so much by supporting events hosted by others. Thanks for chiming in!

  • My org has engagement opportunities throughout the month. We have a few webinars and community volunteer opportunities available, and our African American employee resource group, Synergy, and department of Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging are partnering up for special opportunities, including fundraising and blood drives. Equity is one of the primary tenets at my org, and I hope our efforts in the community solidify that commitment. Thanks for posting, Jessica.

Happy Friday afternoon all- We started this month with sharing our keynote speaker who also happens to be an Alum of our college!! We also asked employees to share what Black History Month means to them and will be sharing their stories throughout the month.

Our organization does not do anything for Black History Month or any month really.

Although I am the instigator in some things office I don't think this is up my alley.

I am looking forward to seeing what others do that I can pass along to our team!!

@Michaele ClayborneCrosby pretty exciting to hear about an Alum returning to be your Black History Month guest speaker! Would love to have you come back in the chat afterwards to share any interesting takeaways from her talk. I'd also be interested to read some of your colleagues responses about what Black History means to them…I'm always intrigued with how everyone's stories, experiences, and perspectives are always so different. Thanks for sharing!

My school is having a student & fac/staff discussion on Where is the social justice in school policing? as one of many parts of celebrating Black History Month. History is not only what has happened in the past - but also our current response to historical actions. I'm really excited to hear what our students have to share!

Oooo, I agree @Carlene Johnson it would be very interesting to read some of the responses from students on this topic. Would love to have you come back to this discussion and share some of that feedback if you can. Thanks for posting!

  • My org has invited a local activist and community organizer for a lunch and learn. She plans to talk about her work in the Las Vegas Black community.

In the UK, Black History Month is celebrated in October and February is LGBT+ History Month. So one of the things I have learnt this month is why my friends and I seem to get to enjoy both more often than I realised!

My organisation's Learning and Development Team circulated our Equality, Diversity and Inclusion calendar at the beginning of the month, which included the various events we will be marking throughout the year - either as live events, Workplace campaigns or other in other ways. Additionally, this year a range of eLearning courses have been made available on our training site - which is particularly handy since alongside many of the office staff working from home a lot of the time, my colleagues are also spread across a number of sites and all work on different shift patterns.

Hi @Krystle Chappell this sounds really interesting…community organizers are always so well connected to the neighborhood and community needs. I'd be interested to learn what action steps or next steps they will share with your org. If possible, would love for you to come back and share your takeaways from that talk. Thanks for posting!

Rachel, this is really good stuff! At Blackbaud we are very familiar with Black History Month in the UK as we have a team there and celebrate with them as a global company in October. I'm very intrigued with your org's Learning and Development Team. This team seems to be super organized just based on what you've shared for Black History Month. Also love the e-Learning options too! Thanks for sharing!
