Insurance Questions/ Help (Charleston Area) for new org

Hello all! My name is Ray Borkman and I work for Blackbaud in Marketing on our Grantmaking solution.

But today instead of providing info on Grantmaking, I'm here asking questions as a board member of a new non-profit located here in Charleston, SC where I live.

We are a Justgiving account and are a developing network of fellowship for men who have experienced tragedy in their lives and enjoy, or would like to become involved in Cycling.

This sprung from a friend of mine (the founder) who tragically lost his son in an alcohol related accident at University. He found 2 things in his trials to navigate his grief: 1) there were some orgs that catered to mothers and families but none for men and fathers exclusively. 2) His best medicine was often long bike ride in the beautiful lowcountry of SC.

Hence was born “Grief Cycles.” We're very new, and still trying to figure things out.

But, we figure one way we can raise money is with rides. There's a substantive cycling community in Charleston and we believe they will support such a thing with rides.

Generally, we'd love to find a mentor organization (pref in the area but not necessarily) who can help us navigate these uncertain early days as we try to do things right, and with limited knowledge.

More specifically we have insurance questions: 1) what kind of liability protection should we look into for the org (& bod members?) and 2) what is the best practice around getting insurance for fundraising rides? Ie, we've thought of waivers, but is that sufficient? What do orgs do? What is best practice?

    @Ray Borkman, being an ex-pat from Charleston, have you reached out to Charleston Moves or Palmetto Cycling Coalition. I am betting that they could help you with your questions more specifically given their missions. Good luck.

    Hi @Ray Borkman,

    I'm over at the South Carolina Aquarium. I can look into what sort of liability insurance and waivers we have for our events (like our 5K run/walk). And I like Angel's suggestion of reaching out to Charleston Moves. They've done ride events like The Ride of Silence and, a few years back, had the Pint Pedal. Might be good to ask what they did. Katie and Savannah are both awesome people.
