Add bullet points to NXT email text

I'm working on a newsletter in NXT and can't figure out how to add bullet points to a list - has anyone had success with this? I swear I'd done it before, but maybe I'm thinking of something else.

@Elizabeth Bonin - Try creating the copy you want within a Word document, then copy/paste it into an NXT Email Marketing email.

if you begin a line with a dash and space character, then type what you want to type, hit enter, you get auto-formatted bulleted list

if you begin a line with a number 1 immediately followed by a dot and space character, then type what you want to type, hit enter, you get auto-formatted numbered list

Already tried that - the bullet points copied over are poorly formatted and very small.
