Accepting Donations Via Bitpay

Is anyone doing this? I'm interested but not sure how it would integrate with RE (if at all). Would we just have to process bitpay donations externally and manually enter them into RE?

We have not yet encountered donations of BitCoin or NFTs, but during the most recent Blackbaud online presentation a company mentioned introducing ways to integrate both into an app. I discussed it with my department, and it seems like the best course of action is to treat it like a stock and enter it accordingly.

  • @Tyson C We don't use BitPay, but we do have a contract with a similar company called The Giving Block. It seems like they work about the same - a donor gives a certain amount in crypto, which TGB (or, in your case, BitPay) exchanges for USD. That then sits in your account until you request a transfer to your org's bank account, and then gets treated like a cash donation.

I will say, the ROI for us has been very poor. In the year+ we've been customers, we've had one donation, which was a test done by a staff member after we first signed with TGB. And since that donation was $20 and TGB has a minimum of $50 before you can transfer funds, that money is just kind of sitting there. Crypto morale is also generally in the gutter right now due to recent high-profile lawsuits, and I'm not sure I believe there's a swathe of “crypto philanthropists” out there. I think most people who invested aren't really giving it away, at least not to charitable causes.

Best of luck in this, though! I'm sure others will have wildly varying experiences.

  • @Bobby Steurer We have not had any requests for crypto payments from donors but I was just curious what implementation would look like. Thanks for the insight.
