Job Summary

The Assistant Director, Finance oversees and implements comprehensive programs and services within University Advancement. Posts revenue and expense transactions, reconciles accounts, and prepares a variety of financial reports.

Job Description

Typical duties include but are not limited to:

  • Manages the day-to-day operations of the finance department. Provides guidance and direction to support and professional employees.
  • Assists in the oversight of accounting and finance functions. Ensures accounting practices are followed in accordance with university policy and generally accepted accounting practices (GAAP).
  • Manages the financial record keeping, reporting, and other accounting functions for a college, department, or unit.
  • Manages the financial reporting to University departments, Banking institutions, Credit Card institutions and the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).
  • Maintains University funded budgets and purchase orders for University Advancement.
  • Participates in the strategic planning for assigned areas and assists with developing and implementing the departmental strategic plan.
  • Establishes performance goals and measures to evaluate success within the assigned area of responsibility.
  • Assists in the development and implementation of policies, procedures and control systems.
  • Assists in reporting of the Foundation’s investments.

Other Duties:

  • Assists with the Foundation annual campaign and special events.
  • Reconciles bank statements, credit card services and Foundation departmental accounts.
  • Serves as the department’s payroll custodian.
  • Other job-related duties as assigned.

Additional Job Description

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited institution in Accounting, Finance, or closely related field.
  • Six years of professional full-time experience related to the position.
  • Any appropriate combination of relevant education, experience, and/or certifications may be considered.
  • Experience operating a personal computer and proficient with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook).

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s Degree from an accredited institution in Accounting, Finance, or closely related field.
  • Related experience in a higher education setting.
  • Experience with Blackbaud Financial Edge.
  • Experience with Workday.
  • Experience managing the work of others in an accounting or finance office.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) and Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB) as they related to higher education accounting activities.
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills and the ability to prioritize and complete simultaneous projects.
  • Skill in collecting and analyzing complex data.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with a diverse group of staff, faculty, students, and vendors.
  • Ability to take initiative to plan, organize, coordinate and perform work in various situations when numerous and diverse demands are involved.
  • Ability to thrive in an organization that values the diversity of its student body and workforce and actively promotes equity and inclusion.
