Always merge duplicates in NXT then left over information in RE database view. That way you won't miss anything in the merge. There are documents you might find helpful such as Austen Brown's documentation on this process. If you can't locate it, I can pass it along later.

@Laura Taylor I'm guessing that you are merging in database view given your post. If you are not in RE NXT, that is all that you would have available to you, but if you are in RE NXT, I would definitely recommend the webview so that you don't lose any attachments in webview.

When it comes to losing data, there are a few different schools of thought, but I tend to merge all data and then open the records in webview and remove any duplicated data (if the address shows up twice, constituent codes, etc.). Others will select only the data that they want to merge to save the clean-up time.

I am sure that the documentation will go over this, but always look at the relationships. I always make sure not to delete the record and I screen-shot the gift information as a belt and suspender approach. I am not sure if you are tracking prospect information but I would also look at that post clean up. There are a few other areas that you will need to review, as a due diligence.
