Soft crediting donors

What would be the best process to enter soft credit to individuals donors? We have one check from a community foundation give day and need to soft credit donors. I would like to NOT have to enter each individual gift if possible.

  • @Kim Ward In Altru, I would enter the gift with the community foundation and then in the payment edit the recognition credits to add all the constituents. This way you can pull a list of soft credits via query.

  • @Lisa Saneda Thanks for your advise. we're getting ready to process. We have RENXT, so I'm not sure what Altru is?

  • Hi @Kim Ward,

I see this is from a few weeks ago (so I assume you found a solution or workaround for this instance). Just to add on for future reference, I believe you can do what Lisa suggested. You can enter one check and then assign Soft Credits to multiple constituents.

This can be done when adding a new gift or editing an existing gift. You can do this when entering a single gift or through a Batch.

You can also assign custom soft credit dollar amounts to the different donors (e.g. - $1,000 check where $600 was from Susan Jones and $400 is from Carlos Lopez. You can enter the full check and then give each donor the corresponding soft credit amounts).

Here's a guide that may provide some more detail:

It's been a few years since I've worked in RE, but I was not a fan of split gifts. I had some reporting challenges there. Perhaps that won't affect you or maybe Blackbaud has made an adjustment there with NXT. But, using the situation from above, if Susan's gift was going to one funding bucket and Carlos' to a different one, that can be done, but has some wrinkles that come along with it.

The last note is that this could be an issue if a portion of the community foundation check is meant to be a pledge payment while the rest would be new revenue. I believe that may be a challenge for you to enter as a single gift since they would likely have different Gift Types.

Thanks so much for your suggestion. We received the foundation check this past week, and so your reply was very timely. Much appreciated.
