Year End Tax Receipts

What is common practice for sending out year end tax-receipts, to all donors or those who have donated a total of $X amount or more?  If latter, what is the $X amount used?

We receipt each gift when recieved with the exception of monthly/payroll donors.  These donors receive consolidated year end receipt.

Per IRS required for gift of $250 or more - IRS Publication 1771  "A separate acknowledgment may be provided for each single contribution of $250 or more, or one acknowledgment, such as an annual summary, may be used to substantiate several single contributions of $250 or more."

If you receipt upon receiving gifts but still want to sent something year end, it can be a giving history but should not be a second receipt.
  • For better clarity, we are currently sending receipts at the time of the gift and year end receipts for all monthly donors and anyone else that requests one.  However, we are considering expanding sending year end receipts to all donors above a certain yearly giving total.  I'm inquiring in this community if other organizations send to more than monthly donors and if so, at what amount?
  • We do anyone who has multiple gifts during the year,
is payroll deduction or has a total of $250 for the
    year.

This generally catches anyone who would ask us.

We generally send an acknowledgement at the time of one-time gifts, starting at $25. If a donor continues to make such gifts, we notify them that we will convert to a year-end acknowledgement unless they inform us otherwise. (No one has.) So, we send to all donors who make recurring gifts without specifying a minimum amount. (We are a smaller organization that has a smaller pool of committed donors, so we're not talking thousands of letters!)
  • We send individual receipts for gifts of $10 or more, most of our donations are online so an email receipt is automatically sent. Year end statements are sent to any donor who gave $250+.
  • We receipt at the time the gift is made and larger gifts receive a thank you letter from the appropriate person(s). We also send receipts in January to all donors for the previous calendar year.
