Elizabeth Perron

I was 10 when I declared I wanted to be a truck driver when I grew up. That never happened for me, but I did love road tripping as soon as I got my driver's license.

What is a job that your younger self found interesting? Did you get to experience that “job”?

@Elizabeth Perron as a child, I wanted to be a writer or a doctor. I would write stories for hours. Regular people didn't have computers back then, so nothing computer related was on my radar!

@Elizabeth Perron - Comedian or race car driver. I wasn't picky about which one, until i got to high school and hit a massive growth spurt that took me out of race car driver size.

@Elizabeth Perron, I wanted to be either a bestselling writer or the President. (Just a little ambitious, lol.) Later, I decided politics was too, well, political for me. Now, I write grant proposals and appeal letters (in addition to the database stuff), so I guess that makes me a career writer after all… Anyone want to offer me a book deal on my archive of monthly donor letters? ?

@Elizabeth Perron I wanted to be a Brain Surgeon. In my teens, a family friend who was a neurologist sat me down and we talked through what it would take - years spent in school, residency, etc. After that conversation I came to the realization that being a surgeon wasn't for me. Being a DBA was never on my list of potential careers growing up, I stumbled upon the possibility after college.

I wanted to be a nurse, but I went to college to be an accountant. I dropped out to get married and have a family. My first job was in dining services at a retirement home which was my first experience in senior living. Sixteen years after college, I started as an administrative assistant in a fundraising department in senior living. Even though I am not an accountant, I work closely with the finance department to reconcile charitable contributions . Funny how it all comes together.

@Elizabeth Perron, because of my great love for animals, as a pre-teen I wanted to be a vet - until my dog ripped her stitches chewing on a beer can and dribbled blood on the front porch.

Then, because of my love of horses, I wanted to be a jockey. Except I took after my dad and sprouted upwards. LOL

After that, my heart's desire was to be a mom.

I thought it would be cool to be a cartoonist or fiction writer. I'm still not sure how I ended up as a DBA, but it's worked out, I guess. Funnily enough, I'm almost 34 and still don't really know what I want to be when I grow up. Ha.

When I was a kid, I never really had a strong sense of a profession that interested me. In seventh grade, we did a career aptitude/interest type thing. We completed some sort of survey and then were given results for what career paths we should potentially pursue. My top three were Lawyer, Teacher, and Over-the-Road Truck Driver. Had no idea really what to make of that, but I felt as directionless as ever. LOL!

I wanted to be a photographer and studied it briefly in college. I had been the department head of photography at my summer camp for a few years. Through those activities I realized that I much preferred the technical aspects of developing film and print making over the creative side of composing and taking the pictures. Which is not that dissimilar to how I enjoy the technical and problem solving side of database management over the creative aspects of interacting with donors!

I wanted to be an astronaut, but as I got older I realised that it was a LOT of work both fitness-wise and academically and that I preferred to watch other people get launched into space.
