Since its inception in 1988, ALS United North Carolina continues to be the central source for services and support for people living with ALS, their families, caregivers, and ALS clinics across the state of North Carolina. Our mission is to
support and empower the ALS community through a collaborative approach to fostering bold research initiatives, advancing advocacy, and providing comprehensive care to individuals and families affected by ALS.
Position Summary:
The Communications & Marketing Manager is responsible for the organization-wide planning, development, implementation and evaluation of all communication, marketing and public relations strategies to ensure that our organization communicates its mission effectively internally and externally. This role is responsible for defining and implementing the strategic direction of the organizations marketing initiatives on a statewide level, including fund development, advocacy, awareness and care services initiatives.
Core Job Responsibilities:
- Responsible for designing and delivering all collateral and communications that is forward facing to the public. This includes but is not limited to all social media Pages, all ALS Walk United Websites, ALS United NC Website, all CPE Websites, Monthly E-News Letter, Care Services E-Communications, Direct Mail Campaign (Mid-Year and End of Year), Advocacy and Awareness initiatives.
- Maintain and update the organization website to ensure accurate, relevant and timely information
- Work closely with the Leadership Team to create an effective, dynamic and responsive communications and marketing strategy
- Work closely with the Development and Care Services staff to ensure materials and strategies are appropriate, and work independently to implement all aspects of communications and marketing for the organization.
- Coordinate with ALS United colleagues for nationwide marketing and communication initiatives
- Develop, schedule and maintain relevant and timely content for social media including (but not limited to): Facebook, Twitter, Instagram & YouTube. Additionally, respond to all comments/inquiries, as appropriate, made on Social Media pages
- Develop and implement a marketing plan to increase and maintain visibility year round
- Recruit and manage volunteers for ALS United Walks, CPE’s, Ambassador Program and other events as necessary
- Ensure staff, board and volunteers are prepared to communicate clearly the organization’s mission, research initiatives and programs through regular training and updated talking points
- Write and disseminate to public, staff and board, as appropriate: press releases, impact statements, media advisories, feature articles and op-ed pieces relating to special events, organization services, research updates, patient profiles, corporate partner profiles, major gifts, planned giving, resource group meetings and ALS-related issues of newsworthiness
- Develop and maintain media contact list for print, radio, television and web outlets appropriate to the organization’s area
- Maintain consistent branding and messaging for all special events, development, care services and public education collateral including (but not limited to): direct mail, event promotions, impact statements, email promotions, acknowledgement letters, etc.
- Ensure all marketing collateral, both internal and external in all modes of communication (printed and electronic) strictly adhere to the ALS United North Carolina Branding and Style Guide
- Maintain database of current ALS United North Carolina sponsor logos in the correct format
- Create or coordinate graphic design for print and electronic use
- Utilize event, project management and fundraising software to include but not limited to: RENXT, WordPress, Luminate Online, OneCause, Hustle, Tiltify
- Collaborate with internal staff on social media and communications planning, and execute content on a variety of platforms (print, electronic, website, social media)
Development Department & Event Support:
- Localize and publish all 6 ALS United Walk Sites in coordination with Directors of Development on Luminate On-Line
- Design and publish Signature events and Community Partner Events (CPE) on OneCause
- Assist in the designing and procurement of event materials and supplies needed for event days to include but not limited to Walk, Special Events and Community Partner events
- Organize the annual inventory of event collateral through creation and design functions, as well as production, order, and delivery functions on a timely basis, manage vendor relationships
- Prepare and organize materials for event days, maintain inventory purchasing
- Work with Development Directors to develop and execute event promotions, which includes posting on all social media platforms, design and delivery (hard copy & e-copy) of posters and flyers for event promotions.
- Coordinate content from staff members to create and send monthly E-Newsletter via RENXT
- Serve as the point of contact for Community Partner Events, providing support and promotion for events run by external groups to benefit ALS United NC
- Recruit and maintain relationships with volunteers and Ambassadors, coordinate volunteer signups
- Coordinate volunteer training pre-event, and work with staff to develop Ambassador training opportunities
- Attend community events as needed and recruit volunteers and Ambassadors to represent
Care Services Support:
- Formatting, publishing and sending electronically Bi-Monthly Care Connection E-Newsletter
- Formatting, publishing and sending electronically Quarterly Clinic Collaborative E-Newsletter
- Formatting, updating and publishing Your ALS Guide Resources on Organization Website
- Formatting, designing and publishing the ALS Information & Resource Guide binder
- Formatting, designing and publishing education materials for Care Services
- Assist in the production of Advocacy posts, collateral materials throughout the year and specifically during the Advocacy Summit in Washington D.C.
Finance and Administrative Support:
- Coordinate the writing, production and editing of the Annual Report to be completed after the audit and tax return are approved by the Board
- Update and monitor non-profit watchdog group profiles annually and as needed (GuideStar, Charity Navigator, BBB, etc.) to ensure compliance and high ratings
- Assist in writing, formatting and publishing impact statements for 990 tax return
- Monitor Google Analytics & use this tool to keep the staff & board informed
- Respond to requests for information and/or interviews from college or university students in relation to school papers, projects or assignments
- Ensure the Communication portion of the Organization Calendar is up to date and deadlines are met
Other Duties
- Attend and participate in all appropriate and/or assigned database trainings (Luminate On-Line, RENXT, WordPress, OneCause, Hustle, etc.) as applicable to primary & secondary job duties
- Attend all 6 ALS United Walks and other Signature Events as assigned. All ALS United Walks are on Saturday (3 in the spring 3 in the fall). Attend other organization events as needed/assigned.
- Support the Special Events Team on Walk Day by owning your designated area, which includes (but is not limited to): training volunteers, registration of participants/volunteers, set up or break down of areas, handling money or credit card donations, etc
- Attend local, regional and/or national professional development trainings and conferences as assigned
- Update or create new processes & procedures as needed
- Cross train in all secondary assigned duties
- Retain & discard documents as appropriate per the Organization Document Retention Policy
- All other duties as assigned
Professional Qualifications and Key Skills:
- Minimum of a Bachelor's Degree in Communications, Marketing, Journalism or similar
- 3-5 years of progressive experience in field, nonprofit experience a plus
- Personal qualities of integrity, credibility, and a strong commitment to The Organization’s mission

Computer Skills:
- Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook, Power Point)
- Knowledge and previous work experience with WordPress is a must
- Familiarity with Canva, Adobe Creative Suite and/or In-Design a plus
- Familiarity with texting, fundraising and/or CRM platforms a plus such as Hustle, Luminate On-Line, OneCause and RENXT

Experience:
- 3-5 years’ experience in field, nonprofit experience a plus
Language Ability:
- Able to read, analyze and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures and governmental regulations
- Able to write reports, business correspondence and departmental procedures
Math Ability:
- Able to compute rate, ratio and percent and to draw and interpret graphs
Computer Skills:
- Strong knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite
- Strong knowledge of the Microsoft Office Suite
- Familiarity with website management, HTML a plus
Certificates and Licenses:
- Valid Driver's License
