Assignments flagged as missing in grade book lock students out

We have been pushing our faculty to make better use of the Gradebook Indicators so advisors can quickly see what advisees are missing, exempt from, submitting late, etc. It is working well except for one thing - once an assignment or assessment is marked as Missing, the student cannot access the work to remedy the situation. As soon as the Missing indicator is removed, the student can access the work. This is adding to the frustration of the students and the teachers during distance learning. Is there something that can be done about this?

  • Agree with this completely. The response I've received from support was that when an assignment is marked "missing" it is considered "graded" and once an assignment is graded, a student can't submit the assignment. Very frustrating for teachers and students.
  • Hi Scott,

I just want to make sure we're speaking the same language. You're specifically talking about Assessments, right? The online quizzes?

In my experience students can still work on Assignments with our without Online Submissions enabled even after they are marked Missing or even after they are overdue.

Just want to make sure I'm clear on where you're hitting the issue.

    Thanks!

  • Jackie -

Yes, this is occurring when a teacher creates a piece of work for a student to complete using:

The selected Assignment type makes no difference.

I hope that all makes sense. If not, you are welcome to call me and I would be happy to try explain ti that way.

  • This is one of the more frustrating features of the assessment set. Most of our teachers gave up on using any Blackbaud assessments because of the trouble it is to use it. I have lost track of the number of times one of my students gets disconnected from his wifi, and is then locked out of completing the assessment when his connection is restored, so he has to contact me to manually reopen it, which I might not see until the next day, so then I have to go extend the time he has to complete the assignment, and if I already marked it missing, I have to go remove the missing...you get the picture. It all adds a level of trouble that doesn't make it worth while to use by many of the teachers in my school, yet here we are, paying our support fees for something that is not fully used because of faulty design decisions made someplace in the past. Argh! One possible request: When setting up an assessment, could there be a checkbox added that says something like : Allow student to continue after being disconnected without teacher intervention? Another LMS (Powerschool) does not have and trouble letting a student back in to an assessment after being disconnected. It remembers where he was and the answers that had already been entered. I was never contacted by any student who needed my permission to complete any assessment. With the current increase in doing work on line from home, the requests I get to open assessments back up after disconnection has increased dramatically.
  • Was the question of "assessments being locked out" ever resolved? Our teachers are having the same problem. The teacher has to watch or is being contacted by the student to "Allow Continue" for them to complete their assessment. For example, a student might be disconnected due to a connectivity issue and is locked out of the assessment and have to have the teacher "Allow Continue." We are going to try marking "allow save for later" question to YES to see if that reduces the amount of times the teacher has to "Allow Continue." Unfortunately, this is not something we can easily test -- it's a wait to see if the number of occurrences are reduced. Any other suggestions? Has anyone figure this out yet?
