Complex admission queries

I'm new in my position and I'm looking forward to using Altru more efficiently. We currently pull data from six different Sales and Revenue reports for our daily admissions and revenue report, but we only need a fraction of the data presented in each report. Any tips on developing a single ad-hoc query that yields the specific data we need?
