S in gradebook
Today teachers open their gradebooks and see "S's" for assignments that aren't online submission - calling Blackbaud tech support says now the "S" is showing for student who change their progress to "Completed" ---REALLY Blackbaud - how does this help the teachers!!! Please take this feature away - why would you do anything in the gradebook based on a change in status that the student controls! I have teacher fuming over this

Hi Kathy Hannon - is this is the case that is really awful! The teacher absolutely does not need to know if a student marked the assignment completed on their end. This just creates a lot of clutter in the grade book.
I chatted with support about it this morning and they told me it was a defect since the assignment didn't have an online submission.
Angie Addison - is this expected or a defect?0 -
Hi Bryan - well support just sent me this idea in the idea bank --- https://blackbaudk12.ideas.aha.io/ideas/K12OC-I-2423 so it looks like the change was by design1

It's really an awful new feature IMO.

We were thrilled when the feature was initially introduced. Teachers have always hated how completely disjointed the gradebook was from EVERYTHING else (Online Submissions, Assessments, Graded Discussions, Rubrics, etc.). The "S" in the gradebook for a "Submitted" Online Submission was a step in the right direction. However, an "S" for students who marked "Completed" is completely useless at best, and incredibly frustrating at worst as students don't consistently mark things as "completed" so it's inaccurate.4
-
My teachers are also very confused today. If the S indicator is for the student's benefit, the teachers shouldn't even see that on their side of the assignment. I also voted!
Kathy Hannon, where did you find that statement regarding the online submissions? I knew I'd read it, but I can't find it anymore. I even looked through every hot fix/release notes from the newsletter.1 -
Kim - it was from the May 12th upgrade notification - I was so excited - my teachers have been asking for a way to track online submission without opening the assignment that I copied it and sent to my teachers that morning. Funny in this mornings upgrade notes, there was nothing about this change!0
-
Hi all, sorry for the frustration and confusion. We will be addressing this asap, hang tight. If we add display options where teachers can turn it on/off for online, non-online and assessments in gradebook will that appease?1
-
Nice idea but a little tweaking is needed.
Only teachers should be able to mark "Submitted" to indicate they received an assignment (by email, Flipgrid, etc) IF the assignment is not submitted to onCampus.
S should automatically appear if a student made an electronic submission to the assignment.
There needs to be something in "Display Options" which the teacher can use to show/hide "S" indicator. I actually went looking in Display Options for this toggle.
Most of our teachers LOVE the S indicator -- as long as the students cannot manipulate it.
Thank you!2 -
Thank you Inger A Cierniak! We had best intentions for efficiency here. The thought was that, since students can mark their non-online assignments 'completed' already today that it would be helpful to the teachers to see that indicator on those because it would be a visual cue that the student believed they had completed the work so as you said had emailed it, or otherwise. And so if the teacher hadn't received it would be a prompt for follow up. And since we had done it for online submissions and assessments we were attempting to close the loop with consistency there. We will address asap.1

Doesn't the “M” for missing in the gradebook prompt that communication between student and teacher? It does in our school and the communication between the 2 determine whether student emailed assignment, turned it in, etc. why mess the gradebook up with an “S” that they can control, which puts the responsibility on teachers now to contact them - seems backwards to me - oh and you are relying on students to be honest and truthful...hmmm1
-
Ok, I definitely hear you. Again apologies for the upset we are going to correct asap. Best intentions on being consistent and efficient but clearly we missed the mark on that part. Hang tight we'll get something in the works asap.1

If you ask me, the "S" should be automatically generated and only apply to assignments with an online submission through OnCampus (and other fully integrated systems like Turnitin; at least, that's the one we have at my school; I'm not sure how many other systems might be integrated as radio-button options in the file upload section at other schools). If a teacher is using another system like FlipGrid that doesn't fully integrate with BB, then they'll have to go there to check in the assignments anyway. Creating an internal marker that students can manipulate doesn't make sense, but rather than letting us turn off a useless and manipulable feature, just make it useful, even if its scope is more limited.0

The S is only helpful if it provides really useful information to a teacher. Teachers do not want their grade books cluttered with unnecessary information. It is an interesting idea for the S to show up when work has been submitted to the online dropbox. I can see why this is helpful! But it doesn't apply to integrations like Turnitin which is also an allowable dropbox. Nothing driven by an optional student action such as choosing to mark an assignment as complete should show up in a teacher's grade book. It is simply not helpful. If some people want it then please give us a way to turn it off. It is unnecessary and really irritating teachers. Thanks!0

We will be rolling back the submitted status on the student completed ones in the upcoming release and then in our next sprint take up adding settings so that teachers can elect which they see the submitted status on (online assignments, student completed, assessments).2
-
I agree I heard from teachers yesterday. They were really frustrated as this is our last week and we are trying to communicate with students what is missing. I love the S for online submissions but some students use complete to show their parents they are done with work. Now an assignment that the teacher decided not to give can't be removed because a student marked complete even though she never sent the work.0

I feel that enhancements are pushed out in the releases that we never hear of. I wish they would be a bit more detailed.

Like many schools we are nearing the end of our 4th quarter, and this is causing a lot of frustration for teachers who are already stressed with the switch to online/virtual teaching. For the sake of teachers' sanity everywhere, please consider doing an emergency update and get rid of the S now.

Hi Sheila Long I will definitely ask if there's any way we can get it out earlier than the Tuesday release. Hang tight.2

Hi all, thank you for all the feedback. We responded as quickly as we could and rolled back the submitted status showing up for assignments that students marked completed this afternoon. Please if you are still seeing the 's' icon on those assignments let me know. We've read all the comments here and spoken to several schools today on what the right path forward should be and it was determined that schools still find the 's' icon on online assignments and assessments helpful so those remain. We will however also be moving forward with teacher control in gradebook display options for whether the 's' shows up on assignments at all, and taking that up in our next sprint so it will be out soon. Hopefully the removal of the status on student marked completed assignments in the interim is well received. Thanks again.1

I have been working with Blackbaud products for close to 15 years, and I have never seen as rapid response to a "non-critical" issue as what you accomplished today. Incredibly impressive. You have established a high bar for the organization. Well done and thank you.

Scott Chrysler that warms the heart a wee bit and makes a rough couple of days a heck of a lot better. Thank you for being so great about it!0

Yes, agree with:

S should automatically appear if a student made an electronic submission to the assignment.

Krista Peterson we rolled back the submitted status on assignments marked completed by students last week.0

I did have faculty appreciative of seeing the submission status with the S. (Also glad that the student control of this "S" was rolled back.)
The main question from many faculty was that the submission status did not appear to work with Turnitin assignments. Because Turnitin provides the plagiarism protection, our teachers use that integration for most assignments, so they were not able to benefit from the "S" submission status. Is there a way to make that feature work with Turnitin as well?0 -
Thanks Geoffrey Goodfellow for the feedback I will ask dev to look into it. I'm sure there will need to be something different done to recognize those as well. Will report back what I find.0
