Report/Query not matching gifts total?

I'm having an ongoing issue where reports or queries for gifts in RE aren't matching what the 'true' total of the gifts in RE is. When I run certain queries or reports in RE, the number it spits out doesn't match other queries or reports that should result in the same number. 
One example: I go through "gift detail and summary report" so I can get a total of all gifts made in FY19. That should give me a report that is the sum of all non-pay-cash gifts made in FY19. However, the number there is different from the number I get if I run a query of all (excluding pay-cash) gifts made in FY19, export it as an excel sheet, and then total them up. 

I'm not even sure where to begin addressing the issue, as the breakdown might be me doing it wrong, might be bad data, or something else, but it's an issue we keep running into. Anyone have suggestions for how to troubleshoot this?

    Yep, that happens all the time!  You have to be very very careful when you try to "double check" yourself, because there are SO MANY places between reports and query that can differ. Check boxes, filters, using query to export (don't do that, unless you're using actual Export!)...it's hard to figure out where the discrepancy is!

    I do use queries to export pretty frequently, I just de-duplicate them based on Gift ID once they're an Excel spreadsheet. It's the only way to be certain gifts aren't being left out, currently.

    There really isn't a simple way to report on household giving in
    RE.  I find that Soft Credits throws off our totals,
    especially in the canned reports.  I usually soft credit both
    donor and recipient and use conditional Formatting-highlight
    duplicate in Excel and manually go through the duplicated gift
    IDs.   I can't wait for BB to come up with an easier way
    but  until then I hope this helps.
