Altered grade plan AP Gov/Econ hybrid class

With AP exams in May, but our Econ and Gov AP teachers want to teach their classes in the spring. To make that happen, they are planning to alternate weeks whereby one teaches Econ the first 2 weeks and then the kids go to AP Gov the next two weeks and back and forth. At the end, the students will have .5 credit for each class. I'd like to enroll the kids in both Econ and Gov for a fully year, but only give them .5 credit for it. Have any of you done this? Do I just need to create a new type of grading plan that is specific to that setup. Any advice for a better way to do this?

  • Hi Amy,

If I'm understanding your question correctly, wouldn't it work to use whatever grading plan you normally use for yearlong classes and make the credit .5? I think that it will automatically break up the credit into the number of grading periods you have (e.g., it will give the student .13 credits each term if you have four terms).

I think the question will be how much you want the class to count in the student's GPA, particularly the semester GPA. If you use a GPA calculation where all of the student's other classes count for .5 attempted credit at the end of the first semester, do you want Econ and Gov to count for .5 each or just .25?

If you don't like the way blackbaud is calculating it, you could click the "Specify Credit Awarded per Term" button on the grading tab for the course, then set it up the credits however you prefer - for example, you could give the students their full .5 credit at the end of the first semester if you wanted to, and then they don't earn any more credit for the rest of the year. Sounds strange, but if it works... Because of the weird way we weight our honors classes, we use that Specify Credit checkbox and it's worked well for us.

I hope you don't have to make the two classes appear on their schedules every two weeks! Now that would be a nightmare.
