Couple of students who want to create an App

Hello Everyone,

We have a couple of students who want to create an App using the Data from the SKY API. We are worried that as developers, they might have access to a lot of data that we would not want them to have, is there a way to prevent them from accessing data, that they should not have?

Can/How do we create a subset of the Sky API for students to only have access to what they need to.

Thanks!

I've shared your question with the product manager and developers who know the SKY API for Schools best. One of them (or I) will get back to you on this. Do you know what sort of app the students might want to build? What do they want their app to ideally do?

    Thanks,

  • Hi Bryna,

Thanks for the response! Basically they want this app to get information regarding their courses, assignment due dates, marks, lunch menu, and student life events. If possible this is at all possible of course.

    Thanks!

    Hi Bryna,

I hope all is well. I just wanted to know if there was any update on this!

    Thanks!

  • Hi Hassan,

I'm sorry for the slow response. We are working on announcing a sandbox where developers such as your students can get access to develop against SKY API without having to use your live school data as an experiment (which we strongly discourage).  I should be able to share that URL with you next week.  Then if you are satisfied with their demonstration of an app you could choose to enable it for their use against your school environment.

    Thanks for your patience,

  • Hi Janet,

That is good to hear! I eagerly await the link. Will there be
    instructions with this link?

Thank you so much for your help!

    Best,

  • Thank you for your patience!

You can view the getting started as a SKY Developer here
    https://developer.blackbaud.com/skyapi/docs/getting-started/learn-api#sign-up-for-an-api-subscription

We strongly recommend you request access to the Cohort environment where we can give you access to sample Education data to play with to get started.

The students' school email can be used as their Blackbaud ID to create an account if they don't already have one with SSO at Crescent School.

Please plan to keep any test data in this environment relevant and professional as it shared among approved SKY developers in our community.
    • The SKY Developer Cohort – If you do not have access to your own Blackbaud environment, you can request access to the Raiser's Edge NXT or Church Management SKY Developer Cohort sandboxes.  (We've got Education in here as well)
    • A Blackbaud customer's environment – If you are working directly with a customer, request the admin of your Blackbaud solution to create a user account for you.
From the registration process you'll be in touch with our SKY API team who will be able to support you through the onboarding process if needed.

    Janet
