Course Requests and the Admission Process

Coming from an EE Background to K -12 allows me to see differences in the way course requests are entered between the two products.  In EE we were able to search the database using queries (advanced lists in K12) and assign a group of students to a class.  This was especially helpful for our incoming freshman so that they we could  search on a field and then place them in the courses based on this.  Unfortunately in K-12 you are not able to use advanced lists to add course request.  I was just curious how others got around this?

  • I also came over from EE so I know it can be kind of challenging as you make the transition to the K12 solution. From what I understand, you are wanting to be able to add course requests in bulk. This can be accomplished in the K12 solution from Academics > Scheduling > Requests and Schedules, then under the Course requests subheading, select More actions then Enter requests. From there, you can select the courses you want to bulk add (you can add several at one time)

Once you click next, you then have the following options to select students.

So whether you want to select an entire grade level, students from a list based on certain criteria, or just specific students, you can do it from here. If you have any other questions about this or need any additional clarification, please let me know.
  • Thanks, I had found this.  The issue for me is that it only uses student lists which I find limiting.  I am just curious if anyone has found a way, other than data import, to do bulk requests when you need a more advanced search than Student lists can achieve.   I hope that explains what I am looking for better.
  • When I need to do an advanced query, I pull the data from an advanced list, and then do a data import. As far as I know there is no other way to accomplish this within the system.

That being said, I too miss query from EE. Early on it caused me great frustration because something that used to be so easy was now so difficult. I guess since I have been without it for so long at this point I have just accepted it and work around it. At some point they are going to have to replace/upgrade advanced lists, which is built on their podium platform. My hope is that they incorporate the level of query ability and field access from advanced lists into the more user friendly lists feature, but we will see if we ever get there.
  • Thanks for the help.  I will do them with data import and I have added using advanced lists to add course requests to the idea board.  Maybe if enough of us vote on it we will see this addition and not have to create imports.
