Best-Practices to Develop List Import / Sync with API

Just getting started with development in Blackbaud. I'm looking for some starting points and general recommendations for best practice when developing an import + sync function to get lists into BB for email marketing.
What tips do y'all have? Is there a sandbox I can play in?
