What does what - Reports?

I'm trying to figure out the components of reports. I haven't had any luck in training. I know "chart templates" live in the "chart organizer." Where do you use a "chart template?" When building reports, you can select a "report type." Where can we find what all of these are? My trainer said there was a "Reporting Guide" in Help, but I haven't found that. Perhaps that's all I need to answer my questions. Thank you!

  • I'm still trying to really grasp this too. I think I have done so much in Excel for reports, I don't think to use Chart Organizer.

The way I see it Chart Organizer is where you design the look of a report and under Reports is where you select the content of the report. I still tend to just go in reports to get data. Sorry, not much help. I do want to learn more about chart organizer and how to really use it.
  • Hi,

The Chart Organizer is mostly used for Financial Statements - Balance Sheet and Income Statements. That is where you can customize the look, choose which accounts roll up into what line item, etc. Then when you build a statement, you can choose the level of detail - so you can have one at a much higher summary level and other reports that contain more detail. Attached are two guides - they are for database view, and somewhat generic, but could be used as a baseline. I hope that helps.
  • Check out the guides that Mary attached...especially the visual chart organizer. They are extremely helpful!!!
  • Thank you! This is perfect!
  • What I do is design the desired look of balance sheet and income statement row formats in Excel by labeling categories for different levels of detail and then assign account codes. Name the VCO and assign it to the report “General” tab along with a level 2 or 3 or 4. Level 4 is account code, not full account. Then work on the column layout under content, and make as many date column “relative” to the first date column (eg same month, year minus 1). You can then add filters to add further restrictions. See sample VCO attached. VCO Outline.pdf. I hope this helps someone.
